Team Brett Partay 2008 - An Amazing Success

Proudly Supported by:
Team Brett Partay 2008

After the resounding success of our inaugural Partay of 2007 that sold out all 550 tickets a week before the event, this year we knew one thing for sure - We needed a bigger venue. So we commandeered both levels of SoHo bar in Kings Cross, which in effect almost doubled our capacity. (Last year we were only upstairs at SoHo). Although we aimed high, the growing number of already overwhelming Team Brett supporters didn’t let us down. And yet again, the event sold out.

The night kicked off with $2 drinks from 7.30 until 9.30 thanks to our generous sponsors Toohey’s New, Beck’s beer and Taylors wines. Needless to say it didn’t take long for everyone to get into the mood, especially once the seductive sounds of acoustic outfit Jerekuresa filled the room. Sexual Healing was a highlight of their hour long set which left the crowd begging for more. But with such a jam-packed entertainment roster there simply wasn’t time. Besides, the Jerekuresa duo wanted to get in front of the stage too where all the fun was being had.

By about 10pm our main act Wet Zelko kicked off their first set as did a few revellers their inhibitions. On the dance floor there wasn’t enough room to swing a cat, with classic rock & roll covers shaking the foundations and getting everyone on their feet. By the time the band took their break they weren’t the only ones wet. We had no choice but to open the upstairs nightclub and unleash DJ’s Jimbingo, DJ Ronnie and Agent SMITH before the venue burst at the seams. It didn’t help. By that time our entire guest list had claimed real estate on one of the two dance floors and there was a steadily growing queue of slackers outside who had not pre-purchased their tickets.

Wet Zelko’s final hour of power on the mic brought the house down with classics from The Choirboys, Akka Dakka, Billy Joel and a couple of one hit wonders that you know every single word to, but have no idea of the artist. An impromptu performance by a pretty young blond party-goer that joined the band on stage set the tone for the rest of the night. By now all bets were off as were some items of clothing.

Around midnight the crowd inside started to thin, only to be replaced by those waiting patiently outside who were still determined to get a taste of a party that has now become “a must” on Sydney’s party circuit.

The partay wrapped up at around 4am much to the delight of hundreds of pairs of feet that knew they were on the home stretch but still had to battle for a cab.

At this point the details of the rest of the night get a little hazy to say the least. But one thing we are sure of is that an impressive $32,000 was raised for cancer research. The Brett Levien Sarcoma Cancer Foundation will present that money to Cure Cancer Australia to help fund a research grant to bring us one step closer to a cure for cancer.

If you missed out on tickets this year, make sure you’re available the night before ANZAC Day 2009. Team Brett has made that night our own. And with a much needed public holiday the next day to recover there really are no excuses.

If you did come, thank you for your support. We hope you had a ball as we did. And of course we hope to see you there next year too.
